Filipinos turn to digital payments as they adjust tot he new normal

Shopee Sees Growth In Digital Payments as Filipinos Adjust to the New Normal.

Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, saw an acceleration in digital payments as Filipinos fulfill more daily needs online amidst the ongoing pandemic. Shopee saw an increase in the number of digital payments made on the platform since the beginning of the pandemic. More people paid for their purchases via credit cards, bank transfers, and ShopeePay. According to a Boston Consulting Group report, this trend will continue as more Southeast Asian households embrace digital payments during and after Covid-19.

Shopee outlines three observations on digital payments in the Philippines:
  1. Increased adoption of digital payments among older users: 70% of the total number of purchases made using digital payments were by users between the ages of 18 to 34. However, older users are also starting to adopt digital payments when shopping online. Shopee observed a 100% increase in the number of ShopeePay transactions among users over the age of 50. Given that older users typically find it harder to adapt to digital payments, this heartening trend illustrates the ease of use of ShopeePay and the trust it has built among users.
  2. Men’s adoption of digital payments is higher than women: Men increasingly value the convenience and security of digital payments. Over the past year, the rate of growth in the adoption of digital payments is 80% higher for men than for women.
  3. Digital payments are more prevalent in urban cities: The National Capital Region (NCR) has the highest digital payment adoption. Larger cities, which are critical drivers of the Philippines’ economic growth, have better connectivity and a more developed IT infrastructure. Individuals in these cities also have better accessibility to smartphones, contributing to the adoption of digital payments.

Shopee is committed to meeting the needs of its users. Through its integrated mobile wallet, ShopeePay, Shopee strives to ensure that users can shop and pay with ease. In addition to the ease of use, ShopeePay offers several benefits to users, including convenience, a seamless user experience, security, and more significant cost savings.

Convenient and easy to top-up: ShopeePay is easy to top-up through a variety of methods. These include online banking, payment centers, and over-the-counter bank transactions. Through ShopeePay, users can make online payments, top-up their wallets, transfer, and withdraw funds.

Safe and secure payment method: ShopeePay follows the highest security standards. An automated registration process protects the user, and there is also a dedicated 24h Customer Service team.

Greater cost savings with ShopeePay promotions: ShopeePay users can enjoy the following regular promotions:
  • Mobile Load: New users can earn 30 coins when they buy ₱100 worth of load, while regular users get big discounts when they buy load via ShopeePay.
  • Bills Payment: Users can claim 150 to 350 coins (with ₱800 minimum spend) when they pay their utility bills via ShopeePay.
  • ShopeePay Day: Users can enjoy free shipping with ₱0 minimum spend on ShopeePay Thursdays. They can also enjoy up to 20% off discount with minimum spending of ₱200.

Herbalife Nutrition's Second Annual Global Entrepreneurship Survey 2020

Conducted by OnePoll in March and April 2020, Herbalife surveyed 9,000 women on their attitude towards entrepreneurship.
Premier global nutrition company, Herbalife Nutrition, today released new findings from its second annual Global Entrepreneurship Survey 2020, which revealed that women in Southeast Asia have stronger entrepreneurial aspirations compared to women across the globe. According to the survey findings, four in five women (81%) in Southeast Asia aspire to be entrepreneurs, higher than the global average of 72%, with the desire to become entrepreneurs being most pronounced among the Generation Z and Millennials aged 18 to 39.

Conducted by OnePoll in March and April 2020, the Herbalife Nutrition Global Entrepreneurship Survey 2020  polled 9,000 women, including 2,000 women from Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Singapore on their attitudes towards entrepreneurship. Beyond uncovering the entrepreneurial ambitions of women in Southeast Asia, the survey found that practical reasons took precedence as the top motivators for entrepreneurship during this time. When asked about their motivations for starting their own business, the need to support their family (56%), the desire to become their own boss (54%) and the desire for a career change (53%) emerged tops, ahead of other reasons such as wanting more flexibility in their job (45%) and following their passion (41%).
“The need to find alternative sources of income to support their families has become the top motivating factor for entrepreneurship among Southeast Asian women. With more women in the region having a desire to start their own business compared to the global average, we see opportunities for countries to actively encourage women entrepreneurship. Bringing together public and private sectors to provide the opportunities, resources, education, and training to support women entrepreneurs will empower them to break out of social and cultural norms and lay the foundation for more inclusive economic growth. Not only can they benefit from having better income opportunities, society will profit from having a new generation of entrepreneurial role models that can pave the way for better opportunities for women in the future.” ~Stephen Conchie, Senior Vice President and Managing Director for Asia Pacific, Herbalife Nutrition

Financial concerns surrounding entrepreneurship weigh heavy on women’s minds
While the survey revealed that four in five women (81%) in Southeast Asia aspire to be entrepreneurs, only three in five women (59%) have taken actual steps to start their own business. Key barriers that prevent them from doing so include:
  • The initial cost to open a business (58%)
  • Lack of financing and market knowledge support (46%)
Despite these concerns, the potential to grow their income was the top benefit associated with entrepreneurship by 63% of women in Southeast Asia, followed by the ability to better support their family (51%) and the potential to earn what they believe they are worth (49%).

Aspiring women entrepreneurs want to become role models for younger women
Beyond the lure of income, 84% of Southeast Asian women said that a key driver for entrepreneurship is their desire to become a role model for younger women. Additionally, close to seven in 10 (67%) said that they want to help break the glass ceiling for women through their entrepreneurship endeavors.

Overall, close to four in five women (77%) in Southeast Asia believing that women have to work harder to be given the same opportunities in the workplace, they also see entrepreneurship as a means to open up new opportunities for other women in the region. In fact:
  • 58% of women in Southeast Asia want to offer opportunities for career advancement to other women through entrepreneurship
  • 56% want to give women more positive female role models
  • 54% want to use entrepreneurship as an opportunity to showcase the differentiated skills that women have compared to men

Financial support, market knowledge and mentorship key to women in entrepreneurship
To help Southeast Asian women take the first step out to start their own business, the following were highlighted as key building blocks for their entrepreneurship journey:
  • Sufficient business and financial knowledge (73%)
  • Sufficient savings or financial stability (71%)
  • A supportive family (64%)
  • Ability to operate a home-based business (64%)
  • A mentor to guide them in my entrepreneurship journey (61%)
  • Ability to work on their business part-time until they are ready to go full-time (51%)

For more information, please visit IAmHerbalifeNutrition.com

While the road to entrepreneurship may not be smooth-sailing, seven in 10 (70%) women in Southeast Asia believe that the journey will be life-changing, while six in 10 (64%) believe that it will be inspiring.

The Philippines' pension system ranks at 37th globally and 7th in Asia

  • Over the next decades, baby boomers will retire en masse and put social security system under severe stress
  • Only a handful of countries have already made their pension system demography-proof, above all Sweden, Belgium, and Denmark
  • Most other systems will struggle, beset with high public deficits and an uneven balance between sustainability and adequacy – tilted in most cases in favor of the latter
  • The Philippines’ pension system ranks at place 37 globally and 7th in Asia, mainly thanks to its still benign demographics

Allianz recently released the first edition of its “Global Pension Report”, taking the pulse of pension systems around the world with its proprietary pension indicator, the Allianz Pension Indicator (API). The indicator follows a simple logic: It starts the analysis with the demographic and fiscal prerequisites and then continues to examine pension systems along their two decisive dimensions: sustainability and adequacy. Hence, it is based on three pillars and takes all in all 30 parameters into account, which is rated on a scale of 1 to 7, with 1 being the best grade. By adding up all weighted subtotals, the API assigns each of the analyzed 70 countries a grade between 1 and 7, thus providing a comprehensive view of the respective pension system.
“Demographics and pensions have been eclipsed by other policies in recent years, first and foremost climate change and today the fight against Covid-19. But you ignore demographics at your own peril, demographic change will soon be back with a vengeance. Defusing the looming pension crisis and preserving generational justness and equality are key for building inclusive and resilient societies.” ~Ludovic Subran chief economist of Allianz
the increase in the global old-age dependency ratio: until 2050, it will grow by a whopping 77% to 25%, i.e., faster than in the last 70 years since 1950. In many emerging economies the ratio is going to more than double within the next three decades, that is, in less than half of the time this development took in Europe and Northern America. The most prominent example is China where the ratio is going to increase from 17% to 44%. For industrialized countries, however, the absolute level of this ratio is the main reason for concern, reaching, for example, 51% in Western Europe.
“For most industrialized countries, the old Scottish joke applies: If I were to build a stable pension system, I certainly wouldn’t start from here. And that is the situation before the coronavirus and its tsunami of new debt. One of the legacies of the current crisis will certainly be that we have to double our efforts to reform our pension systems. What remained of financial leeway has gone for good.” ~Michaela Grimm, Allianz SE economist and author of the report
This development is reflected in the first pillar of the API, called the starting points, which combines demographic change and the public financial situation (financial leeway). Not surprisingly, many emerging countries in Africa score rather well as the population is still young and public deficits and debts are rather low. On the other hand, many European countries such as Italy or Portugal are among the worst performers: old populations meet high debts.

The second pillar of the API is sustainability, measuring how systems react to demographic change: Are there built-in stabilizers or will the system be blown apart when the number of contributors falls while that of beneficiaries keeps rising? In that context, an important lever is the retirement age. In the 1950s, an average 65-year old man, living in Asia could expect to spend around 8.9 years in retirement (women 10.3 years). Today, the average further life expectancy of a 65-year old is 17.8 years for women and 15.2 years for men and it is set to increase to 19.9 years (women) resp. 17.5 years (men) in 2050. As a consequence, the ratio of working life to time spent in retirement has declined markedly. Countries, which decided to adjust the legal retirement age or the increase of pension benefits to the development of further life expectancy like the Netherlands, have thus a more sustainable pension system than countries were postponing retirement further is still a taboo.

The third pillar of the API rates the adequacy of the pension system, questioning whether pension systems provide an adequate standard of living in old age. Important levers are the coverage ratio – i.e. how big are the shares of the working-age population and the age group in retirement age that are covered by the pension system? –, the benefit ratio – i.e. how much money (measured in terms of average income) does an average pensioner receive? –, and last but not least the existence of the capital-funded old-age provision and other sources of income. Overall, the average score in the adequacy pillar (3.7) is slightly better than that in the sustainability pillar (4.0), a sign that most systems still put greater weight on the well-being of the current generation of pensioners than on that of the future generation of tax and social contribution payers. The countries leading the adequacy ranking have either still rather generous state pensions, like Austria or Italy, or strong capital-funded second and third pillars, like New Zealand or the Netherlands.

However, Capital-funded retirement solutions are under increasing pressure in the persisting low-interest-rate environment. The COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated this trend by further pushing down yields.
“The low yield environment has forced both pension funds and life insurers to explore alternative asset classes. This push into alternatives enables benefit providers to capture the illiquidity premium that matches well with their portfolio duration. Another strategy is to offload risk rather than chasing returns as longevity swaps, pension risk transfers and creative reinsurance set-ups become means of optimizing the exposure taken on by pension funds and insurers.” ~Cameron Jovanovic, head of global retirement proposition at Allianz SE
Combining the scores of all three pillars of the API gives the overall results: Sweden, Belgium, and Denmark come out as the relatively best pension systems worldwide (see table). The Philippines, on the other hand, ranks at place 37. The Philippines have not only one of the youngest populations in the region, but aging will also be less rapidly: The old-age dependency ratio will “only” double over the next three decades to around 18%. The Philippines’ pension system scores slightly above the global average in terms of sustainability (3.5), reflecting the low contribution rate in the first pillar. Deductions for early retirement and a demographic fac-tor in the pension formula could the system stabilize further. The real challenge, however, is the adequacy of the system (4.8): Coverage is low and a capital-funded second pillar is non-existent. Although the Philippines still have demographics on their side, they should strive for pension reforms: Better to repair the roof when the sun is still shining.
