How SM Prime’s environmental leadership and innovation are continuously powering a more sustainable future for all

Integrating sustainability, SM City Bicutan offers solar-powered parasols with nighttime illumination in its Sky Garden.

Sustainability is a strategic imperative that is ingrained in SM Prime's business practices rather than just being a statement.  Concrete results that show the organization's creativity and leadership in environmental initiatives are evidence of this, as is the consistent delivery of quantifiable advancements in sustainability throughout its developments.

Focused on its Net Zero 2040 objectives, SM is further solidifying its dedication to environmental sustainability by integrating solar energy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on fossil fuels from the grid, scaling up the use of renewable energy solutions on its properties, and aligning its operations with global climate goals.

Currently, 47 SM Supermalls across the country have solar photovoltaic (PV) systems installed, with a combined peak capacity of 63 Megawatts as of early 2025.  The 118,313 solar panels that make up these systems are spread across mall rooftops, reducing carbon emissions in a quantifiable way and setting a major standard for the use of renewable energy in the Philippine commercial real estate industry.

With the MOA Sky walkway, SM Mall of Asia harnesses solar energy to deliver a combined 3MW of power —enough to run 1,000 escalators a day or power 1,800 homes for a month.

SM Mall of Asia's MOA Sky showcases a multi-use rooftop with a solar-covered walkway, contributing to their significant renewable energy capacity.

One of the company's biggest projects, SM Mall of Asia (MOA), demonstrates this dedication with MOA Sky, a multipurpose rooftop.  Among its features is a solar-covered promenade that incorporates 555 PV panels, providing pedestrians with shade and adding an extra 0.3 megawatt peak capacity.  Now that 11,355 panels have been erected, SM MOA's cumulative solar PV system generates 3 Megawatts of peak power, which is sufficient to run about 1,000 escalators for a day or supply electricity to 1,800 typical houses for a month.

SM Engineering, Design, and Development Corporation Vice President Engr. highlighted SM's renewable energy initiatives at the 2025 Energy Efficiency Day conference.  The group's performance and continuous operational energy efficiency initiatives were presented by Teodoro Bautista.  The program also played a significant role in SM MOA's acceptance as the first Sustainable Energy Award for a Private Institution, which was given by the Department of Energy and confirmed the environmental benefits and commercial feasibility of widespread solar adoption.

Solar-powered parasols at SM City Bicutan’s Sky Garden provide 4–5 hours of nighttime lighting after just 3 hours of daytime charging.

Meanwhile, another SM mall, SM City Bicutan, has featured solar-powered parasols within its Sky Garden.  These buildings, constructed with both purpose and form in mind, employ solar energy to give 4 to 5 hours of nocturnal lighting after a 3-hour daylight charge.  These projects not only save energy but also highlight how crucial it is to incorporate environmental factors into the clientele's experience.

“Through these initiatives, we are able to significantly reduce our carbon footprint and create long-term operational savings for our malls, while simultaneously introducing innovative solutions towards a greener and brighter future for everyone.” ~Steven Tan, SM Supermalls President

A major element of SM Prime's climate action plan in accordance with the Net Zero 2040 roadmap is the company's shift to renewable energy.  The corporation continues to lead the way in achieving national and international climate goals by systematically decarbonizing its whole portfolio and producing quantifiable sustainability results that have a long-lasting positive environmental impact.
