WalterMart eyes UNLI-Fresh expansion with Mayani, rolls out Palengke Day

Shoppers flock the UNLI-Fresh grocery pavilion of WalterMart and MAYANI as they fill their shopping bags with freshly-harvest produce for only P399

Supermarket chain leader WalterMart is strengthening its shopper relevance and casting a bigger community reach through its various shopping formats this 2023, particularly its flagship innovation UNLI-Fresh 399 with fast-growing agri-fisheries firm MAYANI.

With a retail network of 45 stores spanning the entire Luzon, WalterMart has already institutionalized this anticipated weekend shopping bonanza – which now moves metric tons of harvest per day - by unveiling its provincial and Metro Manila caravans for the first quarter of this year: Cavite, Batangas, and Bulacan for February, then Pampanga, Nueva Ecija, Muntinlupa, and Calabarzon region this March.

Building on this shopping energy is also the roll-out of the first ever "Palengke Day" in WalterMart Muntinlupa this February 17 to 19 which seeks to put a modern take on the concept of "bagsakan" and enable even the nearby "palengke"  vendors to avail of freshly-sourced everyday local products such as onions and eggs, two of the most in-demand staples now given the recent supply challenges.

“We will provide value to our customers and to our community through: FRESH – commodities of utmost quality, reasonably priced, sourced from our local farmers and cooperatives with our alagang WM personalized service; SAVINGS – everyday savings with competitively-priced merchandise and options for private labels and house brands; and CONVENIENCE – provide complete assortment in a clean, safe, and comfortable one-stop shop with fast transactions both offline and online. Sharing the same vision with MAYANI, we always aim to bring good value products to our customers and provide a better life to our partner farmers.” ~Rose Caalam, General Manager of WalterMart Supermarket

Tracing its beginnings as a small community supermarket in 1992, WalterMart now boasts of over 20,000 competitively-priced items and key consumer-oriented milestones including the mounting of Palengke Fresh with MAYANI during the height of the lockdown, its 5S Safe Shopping Program, and its CallMeWally same-delivery grocery delivery service – all under the aegis of its service campaign of “More to Love at WalterMart.”

“We will continue to innovate our joint offerings with WalterMart while being steadfast in our mission-first approach of strengthening those institutional market linkages for our smallholder growers and producers. Agriculture is a foundational and priority sector for the country, and we are optimistic that with the ecosystem of partners we developed over the years, MAYANI can drive more value for shoppers while creating positive social good across our agri-value chain.” ~Robert Esquillo, Partnerships Manager of MAYANI

From an initial rollout in 2022 of 15 EV charging stations in Metro Manila alone and one in SM City Baguio, SM Supermalls will be opening EV charging stations from Luzon to Mindanao so shoppers and travelers can charge e-nywhere, as long as there is an SM mall. Check out the list of additional locations below:

  • SM Center Tuguegarao Downtown

  • SM City CDO Uptown
  • SM CDO Downtown Premier
  • SM Lanang Premier

Each SM mall will have one Wallbox Pulsar Plus AC charger with charging power of up to 7.4kW and a 5m integrated charging cable. It is compatible with all Type 2 electric cars including Audi e-tron, BMW i3, Hyundai Ioniq, Jaguar, Kia, Range Rover, Renault Zoe, Mercedes Benz EQC, Mini Countryman, Porsche Taycan, Tesla, Volkswagen, Volvo XC T8, as well as Japanese cars Nissan Leaf and Mitsubishi Outlander, and China cars such as BYD, Weltmeister, and Chery.

Kiwa Express Opens in Ayala Malls Manila Bay, Offering Authentic, Premium and Affordable Korean Cuisine

Kiwa Express opened its doors at Ayala Malls Manila Bay, introducing to mall patrons exceptional Korean dining options at an affordable price point. The quick-service casual Korean restaurant is an offshoot of Kiwa Korean Grill at Solaire Resort, promising to bring premium Korean menu offerings not yet offered by other Korean restaurants.

“I’ve been operating Kiwa Restaurant in Solaire since 2015 and there has been this growing demand from Filipino regulars wanting easier access to my authentic Korean food. It is true-to-heart Korean food. Not fusion. Not localized. And we offer high-caliber and quality Korean cuisine at a very affordable price...the quality is identical to the food that they would sample from Kiwa in Solaire.” ~Dr. David Shim, CEO and owner of Kiwa Express

“Authentic” is an important aspect of the Kiwa Express experience for Dr. Shim. The unapologetic authenticity of his food is the key to his success.

Kiwa Express menu features items hand-picked by Dr. Shim and classified as Kiwa signature dishes or chef’s special recommendations. He explains his personal recommendation for first-time diners, ”Kiwa Galbitang, the Korean version of bulalo. I will guarantee you that it will make you very happy.” The hearty, nourishing beef stew is a great gateway to the world of Korean food. Beef short ribs are stewed slowly in aromatics resulting in a clean, delicate broth that is a feast to the senses. Dr. Shim also highly recommends the must-try Kimchi Jjigae -- a warming, spicy stew highlighting their signature kimchi, Doenjang Jjigae, Jap Chae, and Shrimp Tempura.

Portion sizes in Kiwa Express are priced according to individual servings. There are also family-sized options for diners who come in big groups. Packaged meal sets are offered to make ordering easier for customers.

Dr. Shim believes Korean food will continue to be popular among Filipinos.
“I observe food being served to the general public is too much of fast food and instant food. It is too salty, sweet, deep fried and harmful to your health.  Korean food offers a healthy alternative as it uses generous portions of vegetables. Kiwa Korean food, in particular, is not instant nor ready-made food, and always delivered via on-site preparation and cooking. I hope to provide healthier alternative for Filipino people for better well-being. This restaurant is our launch pad, the model on which new branches will be based. When this clicks, we already have other upcoming outlets." ~Dr. David Shim, CEO and owner of Kiwa Express

Kiwa Express in Ayala Malls Manila Bay is the first of many branches already in the works.

Kiwa Express in Ayala Malls Manila Bay is the first of many branches already in the works. “This restaurant is our launch pad, the model on which new branches will be based. When this clicks, we already have other upcoming outlets.”

Kiwa Express is located at the 3rd floor, Building B, Ayala Malls Manila Bay, Macapagal Boulevard corner Aseana Avenue, Paranaque City. Kyndryl report finds only 7% of organizations in ASEAN are focused on building the right data and AI foundation for their business

Kyndryl (NYSE:KD), the world’s largest IT infrastructure services provider, recently launched a report, 5 Insights to Help Organizations Build Scalable AI, in collaboration with technology research and advisory firm Ecosystm. The report, which uses feedback from five hundred C-suite leaders across ASEAN, aims to address data and AI challenges faced by organizations in ASEAN, and provide recommendations for them to build scalable strategies that deliver business impact.

Every successful organization today has embraced digital transformation, with data and AI initiatives at the core. However, ASEAN sees some common challenges that have disrupted the effective implementation of data and AI solutions. The study results found that 48% of participants remain challenged with integrating AI solutions with existing systems, 38% with collecting data from multiple internal sources, and 34% with the quality of data.

“Executives across the ASEAN region understand that data is the foundation of their innovation and transformation journey. However, building and implementing a holistic data strategy is not easy and we see common challenges around data integration, quality and governance. Trust in the data and subsequent AI models is critical to truly embrace a data driven DNA across the organisation and this trust in the data layer is missing in the majority of organisations today.” ~Ullrich Loeffler, CEO of Ecosystem

Based on the study results, the joint research report offers several key insights to guide organizations as they look into building scalable AI. These include:

  1. Data Access a Key Stumbling Block
The report reveals that the maturity level of Data and AI adoption across ASEAN varies, and only 7% of participants focus on building the right data and AI foundation. True insights can only be derived from a consistent and complete dataset that has no data gaps. Building that dataset requires key conditions such as a focus on clean and trusted data, a data interoperability strategy, and synthetic data generation to bridge data gaps.

  1. Organizations Need Data Creativity
A true data-first organization derives value from their data and AI investments across the entire organization, and organizations in ASEAN recognize that. Over the next two years from 2023 through 2024, 77% of participants will increase the use of AI and Data solutions for customer experience, 75% for human resources and 72% for marketing. The returns on investment will be measured in financial terms internally such as increase in profit margins, cost optimization, reduction of operating costs, and so on – across all lines of business, including IT. This will help identify and prioritize business cases for data.

  1. Governance Not Built into Organizational Psyche
According to the report, lack of an internal policy and limited understanding of the risks (36%) are the two biggest challenges of an effective data governance policy in ASEAN. Data governance policies formulated by data-first organizations should include accountability and ownership guidelines, standardized regulations, a dedicated data stewardship team and a regular process for re-evaluation of the policies set up.

  1. Lack of End-to-End Data Lifecycle Management
It is critical for organizations to have observability, intelligence, and automation built into the entire data lifecycle. Building a data infrastructure that is ready for current needs but may not be able to support future business requirements as data continues to proliferate, represents a myopic view. An enterprise Data Fabric, on the other hand, futureproofs organizations as it speeds up and simplifies access to data assets across the entire business. The metadata generated by the Data Fabric will include business, technical, and operational data, which can generate insights for the entire business if managed intelligently.

  1. Democratization of Data and AI Should Be the Goal
The true value of data and AI solutions will be fully realized when the people who benefit from the solutions are the actual users managing the solutions and running the queries. However, only 10% of organizations in ASEAN have business teams managing or maintaining AI solutions. Building scalable AI will require organizations to empower citizen data scientists through training, and access to user friendly tools that help them gather the right information for the right insights and make data-driven decisions a norm for the business.

“Data and AI initiatives across organizations in the Philippines are surging as they seek to drive growth, transformation and sustainability agendas. IT and business leaders see potential in leveraging Data and AI to unlock real-time insights and deliver the agility that is required to succeed in today’s competitive and volatile market. To truly embark on their transformation journeys, organizations need a strong data management ecosystem as the foundation. Kyndryl’s deep expertise in Data Management and AI can help them achieve this – starting with consulting through to execution and ongoing management of their data landscape.” ~Wilson Go, Managing Director, Kyndryl Philippines
